A Gift to Denmark: A Whale in a Can on Mobile Video

Greenpeace Argentina, as part of Greenpeace's global Whales Campaign, in a protest action yesterday delivered cans of fake 'whale' to the Danish Embassy in Buenos Aires.  The action was recorded clandestinely by the activists on mobile video.  According to Greenpeace, the Danish government is part of the pro-whaling meetings held in Japan. The cans were inscibed with "Whales Canned thanks to Danish support."

Moblogging at Glastonbury Festival with Greenpeace, Oxfam and WaterAid

Here's an exciting project I've been working on recently (sorry about the PR speak, it's some copy I've been using in promotion!).

Glastonbury is a giant music festival, the biggest in the UK and probably in Europe, but it's located on a working dairy farm and we need to leave the farm the way the cows like it. So the only trace of this year's festival we want to leave behind are images, videos and text messages. So Greenpeace, Oxfam and WaterAid are collaborating with Moblog to capture the sights and sounds (but, thankfully, not the smells) on a mobile blogging website or moblog.

Text Messaging to Save Trees

Mobile phones are nothing new for Greenpeace Argentina. The organization has used mobile phones multiple times to mobilize its now 350,000 person-strong mobile list to successfully lobby for important environmental legislation. One of Greenpeace's significant accomplishments was the passage of the Ley de Bosques, or Forest Law.

According to a recently UN/Vodaphone report, Wireless Technology for Social Change: Trends in NGO Mobile Use, before the law was passed forests in Argentina were being quickly destroyed.

Greenpeace uses ringtones in campaign

file under:
Greenpeace, ringtones, sms
Just a quick note about the current Greenpeace campaign surrounding the UN vote on a bottom trawling moratorium. Our international office created a South Park style viral animation featuring a song lovingly reversioned from the South Park Movie. On top of that, they're offering ringtones as MP3 downloads so you can support the campaign wherever you go. These just launched today so no idea on take-up yet but should be interesting.

Greenpeace UK moblogs at London protest

Yesterday, we at Greenpeace UK staged a demonstration at Admiralty Arch in London where refurbishments are currently taking place. We've identified the plywood being used as hoardings around the site as having been illegally logged in Papua New Guinea and this is the third time we've exposed this problem on a government building site - they've even had a procurement policy in place since 2000 so you think they'd have got it right by now.

Fourteen protestors climbed onto the roof of the Arch and one of them had a camera phone while I had one on the ground. During the day we published images and videos direct to the web using moblog.co.uk and even though it was something of an experiment, the results have been pretty impressive. Things learnt include not trying to record vox pops next to central London rush hour traffic (doh!) but I found it an excellent way to tell the story of a protest as it's happening and draw in people who might not otherwise have heard about it.

London Event: Campaign Mobile - Forests and Cities

Wednesday 21 Jun 2006 18:30

Westminster Arms, 9 Storey's Gate, London SW1P 3AT

This is the first in a series of events that aims to show that there is plenty of mobile technology out there already and to provide a forum help take advantage of it and to share ideas and expertise.

Oscar Soria from Greenpeace in Argentina who will be talking about his first hand experiences of mobileactivism and some of Greenpeace Argentina's usage of mobile phones in campaigns (which is different!). He will draw on their work in the forest ( Greenpeace Uses SMS To Monitors Forest Destruction ) and the campaign on zero waste that recently won the 160Characters Mobile Messaging Award for 'Best messaging application: public sector/not for profit' as well as their plans for forthcoming projects using mobile.
