It may be the end of the year, but that doesn't mean mobile events are slowing down! With conferences, calls for research, developer meet-ups, and networking opportunities, you won't get bored this December. Check out what's happening with mobiles this month:
- 5 December, Mobile Monday Las Vegas (Las Vegas, USA) The inaugural Las Vegas Mobile Monday meeting will feature presentations of mobile applications, product demonstrations, and discussions about social media outreach and investing.
- 5-7 December, mHealth Summit (Washington, D.C., USA) The third year of the mHealth Summit looks at how multiple sectors (including governments, NGOs, the telecommunications industry, and academia) can work together to create mobile health projects that improve health systems around the world. We'll be reporting from there.
- 5-7 December, Advances in Mobile Computing & Multimedia (MoMM-2011) (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) This research-based conference, now in its ninth year, brings together researchers and industry practitioners to discuss the mobile computing and multimedia industry.
- 6 December, The Guardian Mobile Business Summit 2011 (London, UK) This event focuses on the business side of mobile use – branding, user engagement, content creation and delivery, and mobile advertising. The event also has a large focus on networking for attendees.
- 6-9 December, MobiQuitous 2011 (Copenhagen, Denmark) For researchers and practitioners in the mobile and computing worlds, MobiQuitous offers a chance to share research and learn from workshops and discussions.
- 7-8 December, BlackBerry DevCon Asia (Singapore) Love BlackBerry? This year's BlackBerry DevCon in Asia has more than 50 breakout sessions covering everything from Java development to using the BBM platform, and from how-tos for marketing apps to best practices for improving user experience.
- 7-9 December, LeWeb (Paris, France) This year's LeWeb theme is "SoLoMo: Social-Local-Mobile," and features presentations from a variety of companies (such as Google, CNN, Foursquare, and SoundCloud), with a specific focus on trends in social, local, and mobile web development.
- 12-16 December, UNESCO Mobile Learning Week (Paris, France) UNESCO is hosting its first Mobile Learning Week, which will look at how mobile technology can be used to transform educational processes and outcomes. The week-long event is a closed event, but Mobile Learning Week also features a two-day open symposium on the 15th and 16th that looks at trends in mobile technology development, educational applications for mobiles, and scale and sustainability of mLearning projects.
- 14 December, FailFaire (New York City, USA) MobileActive.org is hosting a FailFaire this December! The event is currently filled, but keep an eye on our Twitter feed for live tweets from the event that encourages open discussion of failures in ICT4D and M4D projects and the lessons learned from those failures.
Upcoming Deadlines
- 7 December: In preparation for the upcoming GSMA Mobile World Congress this February, the organization is now accepting entries for the 17th Global Mobile Awards. There are many categories: Apps of the Year, Mobile Marketing & Advertising, Best Mobile Services, Social & Economic Development, Mobile Innovation, Best Mobile Handsets & Devices, Best Technology, and Outstanding Achievement Awards. - 16 January: The World Wide Web Foundation is now accepting applications for their February 27th workshop in New Delhi on Mobile and Web Technologies in Social and Economic Development. Organizations or individuals wishing to participate must submit a statement of interest to project-m4d-ws-participants [@] webfoundation.org explaining their interest in the workshop.
