October Mobile Events Round-up

Here are some mobile events for the month of October that we thought are noteworthy and of interest to the MobileActive.org community. If you know of others, please mail us at info at MobileActive dot org.

Tue Oct 13 – Wed Oct 14 : Mobile Web Africa, South Africa (Johannesburg)

The first Mobile Web Conference in Africa is a two-day event in Johannesburg that focuses on some of these key questions: How will the mobile industry evolve to a point where the vast majority of people have access to the mobile web and the content they want to view? How can societal and economic problems be tackled by the development of the capabilities of the mobile device?

Wed October 21- Sat Oct 24 : PopTech, United States (Maine)

PopTech explores major trends shaping our future, the social impact of new technologies, and new approaches to addressing the world’s most significant challenges.  Several PopTech Fellows are part of the MobileActive.org community, including Deb Levine from Isis.inc, a leader in using mobile phones for sexual health education.

Fri Oct 23 – Sat Oct 24 : Conference on Development and Information Technologies, Spain

Conference on: Mobile Phones and Internet in Latin America and Africa: What benefits the most disadvantaged? According to the organizers, "The objective of the conference is to promote debate about the influence that the spread of ITC, (specifically mobile phones and the Internet) may have on the social and economic development of Latin America and Africa and, in particular, amongst the most vulnerable segments of the population. The conference aims to review the status of this topic within a subject that needs further, in-depth, exploration."

Sat Oct 24: Open Mobile Camp, United States (New York City)

Join us for Open Mobile Camp, the first camp of the Open Mobile Consortium, on October 24, 2009 in New York City! Explore Open Source mobile tools and code, for health, humanitarian relief, and social impact.  A camp for developers and implementers with some technical chops, to develop roadmaps, further specific apps and integrations, and bond as the Open Mobile community.

Thu Oct 29 – Fri Oct 30: mHealth Summit, United States (Washington, DC)

The mHealth Summit explores the use of mobile technologies to improve public health, particularly regarding underserved populations. It is organized by the Foundation for the National Institues of Health in the United States. It aims to "bring together researchers, policy-makers, collaborators and visionaries from around the world to exchange ideas, novel approaches, research and findings surrounding mHealth issues both in the United States and in developing countries."

Sat Oct 31:  Mobile Tech 4 Social Change Cape Town, South Africa

In the growing line-up of Mobile Tech 4 Social Change camps around the world, join us for a day of exploration and learning with mobile tech developers, NGOs and those imeplementing mobile tech in their social change work.  It includes interactive discussions about mobile tech for social good, hands-on-demos of mobile apps and tools, and collaborations about ways to use, deploy, develop and promote mobile technology in health, advocacy, economic development, environment, human rights, and citizen media.
