X out TB

From the MobileActive blog:

X out TB seeks to reduce the necessity of daily health worker monitoring of TB patients by offering patients incentives for compliance. Patients in the program are given monthly supplies of urinalysis test strips that are dispensed every 24 hours out of a special dispenser. The strips, developed by the X out TB team, contain four printed numbers and embedded chemicals that turn a certain combination of numbers a new color when they react with the urine of patients who have taken TB medication. Patients then send an SMS to a database reporting the numbers on their strip, which is monitored by health care workers and doctors

Text to Change (TTC) is a non profit organisation which is devoted to improve HIV/AIDS education in regions in the world that are in need of help, concentrating on sub-Saharan Africa.

Sub- Saharan Africa remains the worst affected region of the world and is home to almost 64% of all people living with HIV. A major problem current prevention campaigns are facing is how to reach the people who are at greatest risk. However, mobile telephony is booming. The number of mobile users is still growing rapidly, especially in those regions where usage was previously limited. Therefore, we genuinely believe that mobile telephony can make a sustainable contribution to fight HIV/AIDS.

D-Tree International

Every year, millions of children die from illnesses that in the developed world we would never dream of dying from. These include pneumonia, diahrrea, malaria and dehydration.

Many of these deaths occur because the illnesses are mis-diagnosed and therefore mis-treated. There is a serious shortage of doctors and nurses in rural, resource-poor settings around the world; meaning many children do not get seen in the clinic, and often the ones that do, do not receive high-quality care because of the lack of time and resources.

D-Tree is going to change the way healthcare is delivered in developing countries. We are dedicated to improving the quality of healthcare available to the world’s poor by using innovative technology to provide accurate and effective point-of-care diagnosis and treatment.

The goal of D-Tree is to significantly reduce the high rates of serious illness and premature death from preventable and treatable diseases worldwide. At the core of this approach is the development and use of treatment protocols for the most commonly diagnosed illnesses based on best field practices. The protocols will be programmed into inexpensive handheld computers for use by frontline health workers.

These devices will be augmented with a system of patient-held data cards with embedded computer chips that record individual medical information needed for diagnosis and treatment.

This system also allows health workers to collect information including type of visit, diagnosis, and prescribed treatment - information which can be stored in the device and later downloaded into a central database system to generate statistical data for evaluation, research, or surveillance.

In Kenya, blood allocated for transfusions is stored in several centralized blood banks throughout the country. The job of a central blood repository is to ensure the dozens of neighboring local district hospitals are always stocked with an adequate amount of blood to meet the transfusion needs in the event of an emergency. However, most of these local district hospitals lack reliable electricity and phone lines.

Without a consistent method of communicating with the local district hospitals, the central repositories are unable to stay updated about where blood is most needed.
